Preventative Medicine and Heartworm Prevention

We recommend yearly exams and vaccine boosters for both our feline and canine patients. Yearly exams can alert owners to ear, dental, heart, or other problems previously unrecognized.

Yearly screenings for heartworm and internal parasite infestations are also performed on our canine patients.

We believe all dogs should be receiving monthly heartworm preventative since heartworm disease is so prevalent in Georgia.

Heartworms are long, thin worms that grow in the heart and eventually cause heart failure. Heartworms are transmitted by mosquitoes so no dog is safe. Please remember your companion's monthly preventative!

Heartworm prevention is also available for cats. Cats have a greater natural resistance to heartworm disease. Compared to dogs, we diagnose heartworm in cats much less frequently. However, heartworm disease in cats is nearly always fatal and there is no treatment as there is in dogs. My cats Maney, Wiggles, Brandy, and Salt always get their monthly prevention.

We use all non-adjuvanted feline vaccines for the safety of our feline patients. These vaccines have a much lower chance of side effects.

FLEAS!

With the invention of Advantage and Frontline Topspot,

THERE IS NO NEED FOR ANY PET OR OWNER TO SUFFER THE ANNOYANCE OF FLEAS!

For less than $12.00 per month, you can rid your friend and your home of these nasty pests. Frontline also rids your pet of ticks.

Please be certain you are using one of these brand name products for there is no non-prescription substitute with the same active ingredients.

Surgery

We use Isoflurane anesthesia (gas anesthesia) which is considered the safest form of general anesthesia. Recovery is much quicker from Isoflurane than from injectable anesthesia. We recommend pre-anesthesia blood screening to assure your pet is in good health prior to any surgery.

Dentals

We perform dental cleanings using ultrasonic water jet equipment. Dental cleanings require the use of anesthesia. For older pets we require pre-anesthesia blood tests to assure your pet is in healthy condition prior to anesthesia.

Avian Medicine

Dr. Erickson is a member of the Association of Avian Veterinarians and offers both routine services (nail trimming, feather trimming, beak trimming and polishing) as well as specialty medical and diagnostic services (blood tests, DNA sexing, diet consultations).

When making an appointment please be sure to request an avian appointment.
